The real big bang
CFHS trap shooting season is in full swing.
This year’s trap-shooting season began with a bang. Literally! Led by top shooters, Grant Schlicting (sophomore), Anna Benson (8th grader), and senior Cody Rapp, the trap-shooting team just concluded its first year of fall league. In the spring it will mark the third year of trap-shooting being a sport at Cannon Falls High School. This year’s fall league team consisted of 27 members, which is just slightly down from spring numbers that are right around 36. “Trapshooting is the fastest growing sport in the nation, and last year the High School Trapshooting National Championship, held in Alexandria, Minnesota, was the largest shooting event in the world, and Cannon Falls’ very own Anna Benson took second amongst the females” said Schlicting.
Why would somebody want to join trapshooting? “We have a lot of fun making trap very enjoyable, even though our team isn’t in the top portion of our conference,” says Schlicting. As some people may not know, participation in Trap is encouraged even if you are in another sport. All practices and competitions are held on the weekends, so the won’t affect any other sports. In order to participate you need a valid Department of Natural Resources firearm safety number. There are 10 competitions each year including the state championship. All scoring is done virtually against schools that are about the same size as Cannon Falls. Playing time is not an issue with trap-shooting as there are no benchwarmers or favorites. Everyone who signs up participates equally!
