Toughing it out
The Bomber football squad stays close, searches for another win
The Bomber Boys Football team has struggled this year, with a 1-6 record through their first seven games. They started out strong with a close 21-20 win over St. Charles, but have had six straight tough conference losses since. It’s been an all-around battle on offense and defense for the Bombers, who have lost by double digit points in each of those games.
They lost to PEM, at Stewartville, Lourdes, at Byron, a Homecoming duel versus La Crescent, and at Kasson-Mantorville. Often, the games were close at halftime, but the Bombers were unable to keep up in the second half. At Homecoming, the game was tied at the half, and a win within reach for most of the second half, before a late La Crescent touchdown and field goal sealed it. With a tough schedule, it’s been a growing year for the Bombers, who hope to make something happen in the playoffs.
The Bombers’ main issue is offensive inefficiencies, as being unable to move the ball and score puts a lot of stress on the defense. “We are trying to eliminate the little mistakes,” says junior starting quarterback Mason Beissel. “We are trying to exploit our opponent’s defense, countering what they are doing to stop us with quick passes and runs that play to our strengths.”
The Bombers finish off the regular season with a home finale against Lake City Wednesday, October 15th. Section 1AAA playoffs begin October 21st, with a win or go home single-elimination format.
