On the horizon, a giant funnel cloud approaches. The wind howls and tornado sirens blare, warning the public of the tornado approaching. This can be said about scenes in Twister and Twisters. For anybody who has seen Twister, there are some unique changes made to the new Twisters movie, and it is worth watching.
Twister (directed by James De Bont) is a classic movie. (This information, along with all the facts in the article, comes from Variety.) Twister stars Hellen Hunt as Dr. Jo Harding, and Bill Paxton as Bill Harding. The divorcees are in a group of storm chasers together, and they chase cyclones around, looking for the perfect opportunity to release Dorothy (A data collecting machine) into nature. Similar to Twisters, the main characters end up in peril multiple times, although some people say this makes the movies much more exciting.
Twisters (Directed by Lee Isaac Chung) stars Daisy Edgar-Jones as Kate Cooper, who is one the storm chasers. Early in the movie, a destructive tornado wreaks havoc on part of Oklahoma, killing three other storm chasers, including Kate’s boyfriend. After the tragic tornado struck, Kate gives up storm chasing for good, only to be sought out a couple of years later by one of the surviving members of the group. Javi (played by Anthony Ramos), convinces Kate to come and work with him for one week, trying out a new piece of technology to collect data from inside the twister. For that week, Kate becomes invested placing Dorothy V at the perfect, data collecting spot.
A stand-out detail in both movies is a machine named Dorothy, which is what the storm chasers use to collect data from inside the tornado. Dorothy saves lives by giving scientists more information on tornadoes, and how to predict them better. Eventually at the end of Twister, Dorothy IV flies. Dorothy is also in Twisters, only this time, it is called Dorothy V. In the sequel, Dorothy is more state-of-the-art technology than the original. In the original, the machine is constructed out of metal balls and pop cans. In the stand alone sequel, Dorothy is four separate high-tech data collectors. This represents how technology has evolved over 28 years.
Twister and Twisters are both rated PG-13. Though some say that both movies can be suitable for mature children. “I was roughly seven when I first watched twister. I wasn’t that scared, but I’ve definitely grown to appreciate it as I’ve gotten older.” Says Isla Harrison.
Some people think Twisters is better, but some prefer the classic. “I liked Twisters better than Twister, because the plot of the movie was better.” States Isabella Boyum. Both movies are very well liked, and will be watched for many years to come.
