Wednesday’s success
The new Netflix show, Wednesday, has been a great success.
The long, black car slowed and came to a stop in front of the school. The young girl with twin black braids stepped out and stared at the building. “I’m going to hate it here,” she says in a monotone voice. Does that scene sound familiar? It probably does, because it is part of the first episode of “Wednesday,” a new Netflix TV show described as a coming of age show that has supernatural, comedy and horror elements mixed into it. Normally, this combination sounds like it would turn out terrible, but Tim Burton, the director of the show, was able to mix them together perfectly.
“The Addams” originated from The New Yorker cartoons that were created in 1938. In 1964 when the comic was modified for the television series, the creator of “The Addams,” Charles Addams, named Wednesday based on the Monday’s Child nursery rhyme line: “Wednesday’s child is full of woe.”
In October of 2020, “Wednesday” was announced as a project helmed by Tim Burton. The first “Wednesday” teaser was released August 17, 2022, and the full trailer was released October 9, 2022. “Wednesday” premiered in the Hollywood Legion Theatre in Los Angeles on November 16, 2022. The show’s eight episodes were later released on Netflix on November 23, 2022. The amount of time spent watching this show within the first week is insane. The show had a total of 341.2 million hours watched within its first week of release, and surpassed the prior record holder “Stranger Things” season 4 which had 335.01 million hours watched.
The show focuses on Wednesday Addams, the daughter of Morticia and Gomez Addams. Wednesday is sent to Nevermore Academy where her parents went to school after she gets expelled from her last school. She goes on to discover she inherited her mothers psychic abilities, which go on to help her solve a murder mystery that takes place at Nevermore.
This show was amazing, and there were so many things I loved about it. One of my favorite parts of the show was the depth in the characters. Take Wednesday for an example. She acts very cold and rude to everyone in the school, but warms up slowly, and after she warms up to people, she does certain things that show her affection for everyone close to her.
The new show has many fans, and each has their own opinion on the show. Student Bella Johnson said “I love the modern take on the show.”
Mrs. Hernke, the middle school art teacher for Cannon Falls said “I enjoyed how independent Wednesday was during the show.” Georgia Breyure said “I enjoyed how we saw more than just Wednesday’s perspective throughout the show. I also loved the casting and how Christina Ricci, (the Wednesday actor in the 1991 film “The Addams Family” and again in “The Addams Family Values,”) came back and was able to act in the movie.”
Many people enjoyed the show, and it is incredibly intriguing, filled with suspense and mystery. It is highly recommended to watch, and will leave viewers wanting more. Wednesday is available to watch on Netflix in the trending tab. And hey, remember that Wednesday is waiting for new arrivals at Nevermore Academy.
