Quinn and Melissa in a poignant moment in the spring play

This year’s Cannon Falls High School Spring Play was one of the most successful the program has ever had. The cast, made up of a mixture of both middle and high school students, brought to life a myriad of fairytales, but these were not the average stories about Disney Princesses, they were Grimm’s fairy tales and the Cannon Falls cast told them as they were meant to be told, as one super, mega story. Thus the title, The Brothers’ Grimm Spectaculathon.

The narrators, Rebecca Benson and Matthew Breuer, kept the story rolling and at the same time kept everyone engaged with some audience interaction. One of my favorite stories depicted in the show was Cinderella. Senior Quinton Stevens portrayed both of the wicked stepsisters as well as the evil stepmother and while he was running back and forth on stage switching wigs as well as high pitched “girly” voices. I laughed so hard there were tears running down my face. Another of my favorite characters was Prince Charming played by Xander Weinrich. Though I don’t think anyone in the audience could tell what kind of an accent he was doing, (Maybe Australian with a hint of Southern?) Weinrich lived up to his character’s name and was equally charming and hysterical.

I laughed so hard there were tears running down my face.

On night two of the production, (I loved it so much I had to go twice) the cast incorporated the granny panties. The granny panties are a long standing tradition of the Drama team and in at least one performance of each production, in some way, the granny panties are thrown in. In the Spectaculathon, when Carley Norton, i.e. The Wolf of Little Red Riding Hood, disguised herself as Granny, the panties came out and the audience was loving it! Norton put the panties on over her wolf mask and all the while the crowd was hooting and hollering.

In my opinion, this is the best production yet that I have seen done by Cannon Falls. I laughed until I cried and then I laughed some more. Personally, I can’t wait to see what this group of talented students is going to do next
