Bombers Fall in Championship
The Cannon Falls Bomber football team fell one game short of a state tournament berth, losing 29-15 to Rochester Lourdes in the section championship game. The Bombers scored first in the 1st quarter on a Nathan Melhouse fumble recovery in the endzone to make it 7-0. Lourdes then tied the game up shortly after and it stayed that way through halftime. However, the game did not remain evenly matched forever and midway through the 3rd quarter, the Eagles of Rochester-Lourdes showed why they are the number-one seed from the section, as they tacked on a touchdown with 6:09 left in the third. They converted on a two-point conversion to make it 15-7. Though the Bombers had their chance to tie it up shortly after, penalties doomed them and Lourdes never looked back after gaining the lead. The Eagles scored a few more touchdowns before the end of the game and a late touchdown pass from Hunter Johnson to Alex Bultena pulled the Bombers within 14, but it was ultimately too late as Lourdes would hang on to win.
The Bombers finished the season 4-7 and after a disappointing regular season, highlighted by a victory of Kenyon-Wanamingo which secured the infamous Brown Jug, the players finally played to form in the playoffs. The football team upset Tri-city United and Plainview-Elgin-Millville in the first two round of playoffs to reach the the section title game, becoming the lowest seed ever to reach the 1AAA Section Championship. Although the season ended in defeat, the overall year for the Bombers should be labeled as a success.
