Lace up your sneakers, it’s game day. Imagine being with Bomber Girls Varsity basketball team right before a game. One can find the girls jamming out before the game with some hip-hop and rap music, strengthening their team bond, and dancing their nerves away. But it’s not all laughter and fun, with their game faces on, Bomber girls prepare with some intense warm ups. The moment the team steps onto the court, you will be astounded by their passion for the game.

One would  think Bomber girls varsity basketball isn’t doing so hot to look at their standing  half way through the season; their record is 1-10, but those are just numbers. The team has new recruits and is open and welcoming to new players. They appreciate the increase in the team’s numbers –  the more the merrier right? New players include freshman Brooke Lyman, sophomore Kelsie Wilcox Laurel, sophomore Grace Yarbrough,  sophomore Morgan Roeber, junior Kira Jacobson, and exchange student Luissa Pohlmann. The returning ladies were very approachable and loved helping the girls who were unfamiliar with the game.

Not only have new high school students joined the team, but some eighth graders are dressing and experiencing what it’s like to play on varsity. Four eighth graders are rising up to the challenge of playing with older students, Haley Affolter, Makayla Bowen, Bella Davisson, and Belle Freeberg. Davisson had some inspiring thoughts about being pulled up, “I wasn’t really nervous, but it made me want to work harder and I knew I had to put in all that I had,” to motivate younger girls interested in basketball. She wanted them to know they should “always work hard and set goals… and no dream is too big.”

Bombers strive to achieve but winning isn’t always the prize –  making new friends and trying new things keep up their positivity. “We have made a lot of progress as a team, fundamentally. We have come a long way with our passing and our ball handling, and our ability to break a press has come a long way.” The Bomber girls basketball team may not have won all their games, but anyone can see there is much more than a winning score here –  there is a family. “That everyone loves the game and they come back out next year,” is a goal of Kaly Banks.  It is easy to see this team has a strong bond, the ladies perform together and show how resilient, enduring, and confident they are when they work together.
