Creed

The Lantern reviews the movie Creed

Extra! Extra! Read all about it, “Former troubled teen takes on champion in one final fight.” The 2015 release of Creed was truly a headliner, starring the famous Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) and Adonis Johnson (Michael Jordan). Jordan’s character, Adonis, is taken out of a juvenile detention center by the wife of former champion boxer Apollo Creed, who turns out to be his father meaning Adonis was born because of a side relationship. His adoptive mother leads Adonis to a life with everything a child would need to grow up right proving to the audience that life really can get better no matter how bad it gets.

Moving forward to present day, he quits his job after a promotion offer to pursue his career as a professional boxer. Trying to make his own legacy, he uses his real mother’s last name, Johnson, instead of the famous one of his father. As he seeks the perfect place to start his training, Adonis encounters his father’s old friend and adversary the legendary Rocky Balboa, who reluctantly agrees to help him train. Throughout the course of his training he sparks up a relationship with singer Bianca (Tessa Thompson) and has to prove that he can handle the hardships of training and the strain it can put on his personal life.

Creed mirrors Stallone’s original Rocky films and really keeps the viewers on the edge of their seats. The surprise fights, tremendous feats of athleticism, and a hint of romance leave the audience wanting more. Creed is a “necessary reinvention…that makes helpful tweaks to an old formula” and mesmerizes new and old viewers (The Atlantic). This movie brings new life to the Rocky series without swiping the original storyline and everyone really should “read all about it.”
