Girl’s Basketball finishes up season with improved win column

The Cannon Falls girls basketball team season is coming to an end with only three games left before sections. Their current record, 4-18, has placed them twelfth in their conference, but the girls are familiar with being the underdog among their competitors. While discussing the season in review, senior and captain Maggie Rutter says, “It’s [the season] gotten better,

we began to figure out how to play together as a team.

we’ve got a lot closer and we began to figure out how to play together as a team.” The girls have struggled all year trying to figure out the perfect combination to start a winning streak. Due to girls out with injuries and the already small numbers, each of the 11 players have received increased playing time. Rutter later added “Hopefully we can get a few more wins under our belt. I would like to think we could go to state, but that is like a million to one chance.”

One of the biggest surprises of the season happened just two games ago in Minneapolis. After the Bombers defeated Patrick Henry 77-21, the team was informed they could not leave the school because of a shooting only two blocks away. While the students of Patrick Henry had no worries about this event, the so-called “country kids” were terrified. The Bombers head coach, Eric Mace, addressed the team after the game and told them that if he would have known that it would be unsafe for the girls, he wouldn’t have scheduled the game in the first place. Everyone made it home safely and the girls resumed play the next night in Zumbrota.  Rutter added an important message in regards to her teammates, “I am happy no matter what happens at the end of the season. I will be proud of all of the players because in the end I know that we all tried our best and worked really hard.”
