Taking their best shot

The Cannon Falls golf team has some members with realistic post season hopes.

This year’s Cannon Golf team has some pretty good upside. There are a lot of younger members coming out with veterans to help them along as well; these veterans, like senior Matt Moskal, Dalton Tanner, and Jackson Bahr have a shot at the state tournament as well. This golf season has started out with a chilly conference meet in Kenyon on April 12. Most shot worse than expected and Moskal “couldn’t hit the ball,” as in hitting the shot he wished to hit, and feels that it just wasn’t his day. This meet does in fact matter in the long run given it is a conference meet despite it being the very first one for Cannon. Conference placing is based on the average of par differential of the first three conference meets for each player. And this average plays out in the conference championship. Given Moskal shot over par, his average, for now, isn’t up to Moskal’s standards. To give an example, Moskal wishes to place in the top ten at the state tournament, a very tall hurdle indeed.

In order to hone skills into the quality Moskal desires, his practices, along with those of most other varsity golfers, are individualized. One would go out and play some holes with a golfing buddy and practice what they feel is lacking or necessary to bring up to compete with other golfers. This style of practicing is very different from most other school sports; they generally have coaches that will preach the basics and make sure everyone knows them before moving on. Coach Doug Rechtzigel does still believe the basics are necessary to practice but he is confident that each golfer knows his/her faults and will use the buddy system to help chip off the unpleasantries. For now Senior Matt Moskal, like the others, will continue to do just that and practice what he needs to do to reach his goal. The season has just begun for the Cannon golfers and much can be done by each and every golfer to become their best and be in the green.
