The Broadway’s Hamilton
The Broadway musical Hamilton is reviewed by a Lantern editor.
“Would you like to go with us?” my uncle asked. Most people would be extremely excited, but I replied by saying “sure” with a soft smile on my face. The Broadway Musical, Hamilton, has been considered one of the most amazing shows in Broadway’s history. Don’t get me wrong, I love musicals, but I wasn’t sure if Hamilton was going to be the one for me. Everyone built it up to be something incredible, but I didn’t trust that. The reason I thought everyone liked it so much was because it had some rapping in it, not because of the story. After seeing Hamilton at the Orpheum in Minneapolis I learned I was completely wrong: Hamilton was the best show I have ever seen.
When we got to the show there were masses of people crowded outside the theatre which wasn’t surprising because sales show that Hamilton is extremely successful. According to a New York Times article, Hamilton is making 100 million dollars a year. Hamilton tells Alexander Hamilton’s story while painting a picture of American history. It is one of the most political musicals on Broadway. The story relates the past to current situations that are taking place in the United States, and viewers can’t seem to get enough of this amazing story.
Once we made it into the theater, we squeezed into our seats. The lady sitting next to me had a black dress on and excitingly said that it was her third time seeing this show. Junior, Vienna Qualey, has seen the show multiple times now. Not only did she see it while it was in Minneapolis, but she also has seen it in Chicago. When I asked Qualey if she would see it again, she responded by saying, “I would absolutely spend every last cent in my bank account to see it again.” It is not hard to see how captivating this show truly is.
While I watched from the upper balcony I couldn’t turn away. All of the actors had incredible voices that filled the humongous theatre. Every song told a story and each scene flowed together effortlessly. After the show was over and the lights started to come up I had tears in my eyes. It was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen because of how believable the story was. The story has something that every person can relate to in one way or another. Walking out of the theater my uncle turned to me, “What did you think” he asked. I replied with the biggest smile on my face, “Can we see it again?”
