New spring sports
Cannon Falls High School is adding three new sports that will appeal to more students.
Cannon Falls Area Schools has recently uncovered $500,000 in a secret compartment under the flooring of the high school gymnasium. However, with the new referendum now underway, the school was unsure of what to do with the immense amount of money. But, after the school board meeting, it was decided it was only fair to do something with the money that would interest the student body. So, with spring sports imminent, the school district has announced that Cannon Falls will be adding 3 new spring sports for students to participate in.
The first sport Cannon Falls will be adding is a skydiving team. Tim Hodges, the principal of Cannon Falls Schools, stated that the district needed a sport that would “encourage bravery and adrenaline rushes within the students.” The coaches have revealed that all equipment for the skydiving team will be provided thanks to the fortune found at the school. No experience is needed. However, students wanting to join the team must fill out a waiver that is to be signed by a parent or legal guardian.
The next sport that will be funded by the newly found money is an underwater basketball team. Those interested in signing up don’t need any experience playing basketball, though a general understanding of the game of basketball is strongly recommended. The rules are very similar to normal basketball except rather than dribbling, you must swim with the ball underwater to move. Registration for the team will be one week after the pool and arena is built at the school. Hodges clarified that the reason for adding underwater basketball was because he needed a sport “that would put Cannon Falls on the map.” “I was inclined to add a swimming team, but I just knew it wasn’t unique enough,” Hodges added.
The final sport that will become an option for students to join is the ostrich racing team.
“My colleagues and I realized that Cannon Falls was missing a sport accompanied by an animal. And with all this money, we truly felt like we had to go with something exotic,” Hodges explained. It didn’t fit within the budget to build an additional racing track, so the ostrich racing team will be sharing the track with the Bomber track and field team. To promote interest, the school will be providing all the necessities to be on the team including the ostriches, uniforms, reigns, and saddles. Ostrich racing is considered to be a very specialized skill sport, so the team will be holding tryouts to select the absolute best. Tryouts will be held April 7-8, immediately after school. Anyone interested in trying out should meet at the track behind the school at 3:15 P.M.
The district is hoping the addition of these new sports will attract more students to Cannon Falls. “We have never been more eager to watch the future of Cannon Falls unfold. These new sports are going to be the biggest addition Cannon Falls has had in history, as they will increase our number of extracurriculars and foster new athletes within the school to arise,” Hodges emphasized.
