The 2023 Cross Country season is underway and runners are anxious to improve their times from the previous season. The Bombers kicked off their season with a meet in Stewartville on August 31st. Since then, they have had five other meets against many other schools such as Kasson-Mantorville, Zumbrota-Mazeppa, and Kenyon-Wanamingo, to name a few.
When asked what the goals for the team this year are, junior Gavin Johnson explained, “The team is hoping to win a meet.” Johnson himself is working towards All-Conference and a trip to state. His best time is 17:42, which he achieved last season, and his record for the 2023 season so far is 17:49 — which he is working to improve every meet.
This year’s Boys and Girls Cross Country team does not have designated captains. All of the experienced runners come together and step up their leadership to make decisions that include their team’s best interests. The team’s chemistry is strong and they all get along well, making this role easier to carry out.
Freshman Lucy Lindahl is new to the sport as of this year and she expressed, “As a first-time cross country runner, the team has been amazing.” Lindahl’s record time so far this season is 23:02 which she is working to improve daily. One thing she does to better her endurance and prepare for meets is to go on longer runs.
Up to this point of the season, the Girls Cross Country team has placed 11th out of 14 at their Stewartville meet and placed fourth out of four in their Kasson meet. The Boys’ team placed 11th out of 14 at Stewartville as well. In addition, they placed seventh out of nine at the Pine Island Invite. Both the girls and boys are striving for advancement in their results.
Runners are especially excited this season because of the home meet which was held at the Cannon Valley Fairgrounds on October 4th. This was the first home meet Cannon Falls has hosted in about twenty years. Their next meet will be in Goodhue on October 10th. The Bombers would love to see the community there to cheer them on.
