Down to the wire

Boys basketball ends strong season in subsection final

Two clutch free-throws from senior Hunter Johnson were the difference in the 54-52 victory the Cannon Falls boys basketball team had in last Monday’s section playoff game against Hayfield. In the waning seconds of overtime, a swatted block from senior Austin Noble sent Johnson down the court for a potential game-winning layup. Seemingly without enough time to get a shot off, Johnson was bailed out by an intentional foul with .3 seconds left on the clock. After missing a layup earlier in the year against Hayfield, which would have tied the game with under a minute left, Johnson was poised for some redemption. He sunk both free-throws sending the Bombers to the sub-section title game against Byron.

After losing to Byron twice this year, the Bombers were looking for redemption. A close game throughout, the game came down to the wire and was decided by a technical foul on the Bombers. Miscommunication led to the Bombers calling for a timeout that they did not have. This led to Byron shooting two free throws and regaining possession of the ball. Byron hit both free throws and expanded their one-point lead, 49-46. The Bears were able to hold on and secure the victory by a final tally of 51-46.
