Not-so-Grimm Tales

CFHS Thespians perform One Act for competition

Mary Franz, Staff Writer

Imagine a world where princesses are not completely reliant on a handsome, charming, and “fearless” prince; a world where young fairy tale characters speak for the voiceless and lend a hand to the less fortunate through actions and political stands. This winter’s competition One Act play, “The Grimms Tales,” does exactly that. The exclusively high school participants portray childhood figures completely different from the normal adolescent view. We see the stories of: Little Red – a vegetarian with political leaning and self reliant patterns; Snow White – who takes a stand to save the coal workers from the witch; her stepmother; and the most commonly known fairy tale character, Cinderella – who shows her artistic side. Cinderella attempts to avoid the pressure of money, her very overwhelming stepfamily, and Charming – an independent artist trying to stray from the life already decided for him. All the stories are combined with a view of a feminist mother – trying to prove to her 5-year old daughter – that being a woman is more than depending on a male to come and save her from the inevitable difficulties life will make her face. This comedy is directed by Tania Legvold, who takes on her second show here at Cannon Falls Schools. The show headed to subsections on January 25th and tied for second place with Triton. The Grimms Tales were performed for the community on Tuesday, January 28th.
